What Joan of Arc looked like has always been a contentious debate. In terms of Joan’s appearance, historians have hardly anything to go on. The only image that remains from Joan’s lifetime is merely a doodle, made in the margins of French parliamentary notes by Clément de Fauquembergue, who had never seen her in real life.

There is also a statue head from a church in Orléans. The statue dates to the 15th century, and given Joan’s association with the city and the feminine appearance, for many years historians believed this might be a depiction of her. But some historians dispute this.

Luckily, we do have many descriptions of the ferocious maiden. We know that she was short - probably around 5’ 2”, and very muscular with a strong neck. She had dark hair, cropped short with bangs similar to the men’s hairstyles at the time. Artistic depictions of Joan actually popularised the bob hairstyle in the early 20th century. Her eyes were described as “large, dark, and grave”, and matched her skin tone, which was tan and sunburned from her time outdoors.

While in the flames, she did not stop calling out the Holy Name of Jesus in a loud voice, imploring and invoking continually the help of the Saints in Paradise; further, what is more, as she was dying and bending her head, she uttered the Name of Jesus as a sign that she fervently believed in God, exactly what we read of St Ignatius (of Antioch) and of several other Martyrs.

Brother Ysambard concludes: 'Immediately after the execution, the executioner came to me and to my companion, Brother Martin Ladvenu.' Overwhelmed by what he had just experienced and moved to feel sorrow for sin, he was 'quite desperate and afraid he would never receive God's pardon' for what he had done to this holy woman. 'And the executioner said and affirmed that, in spite of the oil, the sulphur, and the charcoal which he had applied to the entrails and heart of the said Joan, in no way could he burn them up, nor reduce to ashes either the entrails or the heart, which he found amazing, like an obvious miracle.'"

joan of arc was for sure a queer woman and that's all that is to it. she wasn't trans or nonbinary. she was a proud woman.

she wore men's clothes to avoid getting raped and sexually asulted by men knights. she didn't had a problem with wearing women's clothes and having long hair. she did that to survive.

Architecture & Morality - Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark

A band that was inspired to use synthesizers after seeing Kraftwerk live, Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark is an interesting band that I quite like. OMD considered themselves to be an experimental band that ended up getting labelled as pop, and with the weird noisy intro to Maid of Orleans, the sounds of the song Architecture and Morality, and some other parts of this album I can understand that label of being experimental. This album has not one but two songs relating to Joan of Arc, a song named Joan of Arc and a song named Maid of Orleans. My favorite song is Maid of Orleans.
